Blue Jays Swoop In for Jeff Hoffman After All-Star Hits Snag with Orioles
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed All-Star reliever Jeff Hoffman to a three-year, $33 million contract, which includes incentives that could increase the total value to $39 million. This comes after Hoffman’s previous agreement with the Baltimore Orioles fell through due to concerns raised during his physical examination, specifically regarding his right shoulder.
Hoffman, 32, had an impressive 2024 season with the Philadelphia Phillies, achieving a 2.17 ERA, 10 saves, and 89 strikeouts over 66 1/3 innings, earning him his first All-Star selection. Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2014, Hoffman was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 2015 as part of the deal for Troy Tulowitzki.
Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins expressed enthusiasm about Hoffman’s return, stating, “We are excited to add Jeff to our bullpen. His arsenal, strike throwing, and ability to miss bats against all types of hitters is elite and will undoubtedly make us better.” Atkins also indicated that Hoffman will have the opportunity to serve as the team’s closer.
This acquisition addresses a significant need for the Blue Jays, whose bullpen posted a 4.82 ERA last season, the worst in the American League. Hoffman’s addition is expected to bolster the team’s relief pitching as they prepare for the upcoming season.
